Niccolò Machiavelli
Statecraft / Stability
· Political Philosopher227 dilemmas faced
Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527) was a Florentine diplomat whose observations of statecraft during the tumultuous Italian Renaissance stripped politics of its medieval moralizing. In his seminal work, The Prince, he argued that leaders must be prepared to do evil if necessary to maintain stability. His pragmatic approach to power and human nature made his name synonymous with ruthless calculation, though he considered himself a realist describing the world as it is, rather than as it ought to be.
What they might say about themselves
I served the Republic of Florence for fourteen years, riding through the mud to parley with kings and tyrants, only to be tortured and exiled by the very state I sought to protect.
On morality
A wise ruler must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge according to the necessity of the moment. Men are so simple, and so subject to present necessities, that he who seeks to deceive will always find someone who will allow himself to be deceived.
